Look for L&E at these upcoming Industry Meetings:


Leon Langlitz, FSA, MAAA, of our Kansas City office, will speak on September 2, 2010 at Kansas Insurance Institute 2010 in Overland Park, Kansas. His speech, entitled "What Happened? Actuaries and Their Love Affair with Risk", deals with Life Reserves/Risk-Focused Approach.


Glenn Tobleman, FSA, FCAS, MAAA, of our Dallas office, will be a facilitator at the 2010 Valuation Actuary Symposium's Session 48 IF - Valuation Actuary Forum in Chicago in September. This interactive forum provides appointed actuaries and others with high-level involvement the opportunity to discuss with their industry peers the issues of greatest interest to them in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.

Roger Annin, FSA, FIA, MAAA, of our London & Kansas City offices, will speak at the Life Settlement Conference in Las Vegas sponsored by Deal Flow Media in October. He will speak on the topic: "Accounting Standards to Value Life Settlement Portfolios". His comments will reflect on the changing landscape for NAV determinations and why audited and regulatory reporting under international and US standards may not fully reflect actual portfolio value.

Cabe Chadick, FSA, MAAA, of our Dallas office, and John Stenson, FSA, MAAA, of Kaiser Permanente presented An SOA Research Study - Evaluation of IBNR Methods for Medical Claims Webcast on Tuesday, April 13, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM EST.

With increased scrutiny on financial reporting and ongoing solvency concerns, health actuaries are faced with the need, more than ever to deliver reliable estimates of claim costs and reserves. This webcast reviewed how the study was conducted and its' results.

This webcast meets the basic SOA requirements provisions and may be suitable to meet the provisions of an Alternative Compliance standard (please consult the appropriate standard).


Gary Rose, FSA, MAAA, CLU, of our Kansas City office, Max J. Rudolph of Rudolph Financial Consulting LLC, and Russel L. Sutter of Towers Watson presented the Best Practices for an Insurance Consulting Actuary to Apply the ASOPs webinar which was moderated by J.P. Neal of Towers Watson.

The audiocast was cosponsored by the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries on Wednesday, April 7. A continuing education certificate is available.


We are pleased to announce that Patrick Glenn has become an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society as a result of successfully completing the CAS Course on Professionalism in December 2009. Patrick has the distinction of having earned the Certified Public Accountant and the Associate of the Society of Actuaries designations as well as the Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society designation.


Roger Annin, FSA, FIA, MAAA, of our London & Kansas City offices, was recently appointed to the Actuarial Committee of Life Expectancy Best Practices to represent underwriting interests in defining mortality for actual to expected industry results. This is a committee appointed by the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA).


Roger Annin, FSA, FIA, MAAA, of our London & Kansas City offices, was recently appointed to the Society of Actuaries' Committee on Life Insurance Mortality and Underwriting Surveys. Roger will be particularly focused on the issue of mortality improvement. This committee provides ongoing research into industry practices and data available for definition of mortality curves.


Scott Gibson, FSA, MAAA, and Jackie Lee, FSA, MAAA, of our Dallas office, attended the Life Settlement Trade Mission which was scheduled for two days in London, one day in Luxembourg, and one day in Zurich. Both moderated several sessions which included "Industry Best Practices" and "What Investors Can Find In This Market". The Trade Mission, which was cosponsored by America's Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) and the European Life Settlement Association (ELSA), presented a multi-national, fact filled event that started on February 23rd, 2010. In a coordinated overseas effort, participants met with interested investors in the three nations. European investors with multinational interests also presented their views. Local interested investors attended at each locale.


Scott Gibson, FSA, MAAA, of our Dallas office, was recently appointed to chair the Data Transfer and Privacy Best Practices Committee of the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA). The committee has been placed in charge of developing a standard and format for the secure transfer and collection of highly sensitive life settlement information. It is anticipated that a web based system will be developed to accomplish these long awaited needs.


Scott Gibson, FSA, MAAA, of our Dallas office, attended the 15th Annual Fall Conference of the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA) in New York City; whereby, he moderated the session of the Investors' Summit on "Life Settlement Fund Managers - Long Term Investment Success". The session was well attended by nearly 150 of the major investors in the life settlement market.


Scott Gibson, FSA, MAAA, of our Dallas office, was appointed in October to chair the Actuarial Committee of Life Expectancy Best Practices that has been placed in charge of deriving the underlying mortality table that will be the standard used in the life settlement industry in the measurement of life expectancy "actual-to-expected" ratios.


We are pleased to announce that Wesley R. Campbell, Sarah A. Hoover, and Jacqueline B. Lee have become Fellows of the Society of Actuaries as a result of successfully completing the Fellowship Admissions Course in September 2009.
